There is perhaps no greater threat to most churches than the Holy Spirit. After all, you've already organised your three songs and a sermon, taken care of the roster and created a bureaucratic structure to deal with any problems - who needs Her help anyway? Most likely, the Holy Spirit would get in the way of all that careful planning that has taken place so as to ensure that the service will live up to God's expectations.
Particularly in Western Christianity, the Church has dealt with the inconvenience of the Holy Spirit by defining Her characteristics and ministry in carefully proscribed terms. Indeed, even in churches believed to be open to the ministry of the Holy Spirit, most behaviour is nonetheless out of bounds. Safely within the confines of elaborate human constructions, the Holy Spirit has become somewhat of a toothless tiger allowed out of Her cage only when it is convenient for the Church.
This Sunday at Space For God this Pentecost Sunday we'll contemplate upon the often forgotten Third person of the Trinity. We'll take the time to reflect upon Her awesome creative power and the way in which all life is animated and sustained by Her empowering breath. Come join with us in the celebration of our active and living God, a God who loves to sing, to dance and to bring pleasure to all things.
