Space For God: Greetings to "Dave's Not Just a Sunday Thing" from Downtown Surry Hills

Greetings to "Dave's Not Just a Sunday Thing" from Downtown Surry Hills

Posted: 08/05/2007

For my first post, I've been asked to introduce myself for the benefit of my readers. This isn't an entirely pleasant prospect - it seems to conjure up ideas of placing a personal profile on the dating site RSVP:

"Hi, I'm Dave. I'm a 24 year old Leo who works as paralegal. I'm 6 foot 1 with brown hair and brown eyes. My interests involve candlelit dinners talking about hopes and dreams over a nice glass of chardonnay, followed by long strolls across windswept beaches hand in hand with that special someone."

Well, now that my contractual obligations are out of the way, it might be an appropriate time for the following disclaimer:

The opinions expressed by the author of this blog in no way represent the Space For God community, either individually or collectively. Any claim to the contrary can best be attributed to delusions of grandeur.

So, what are my complaints about Space For God and what should you be concerned about? So far in my involvement with Space For God, I've observed the following behaviour exhibited:

  1. I've been encouraged to think
  2. I've been encouraged to step outside of my comfort zone
  3. I've been encouraged to question conventional paradigms and not merely assume that they are right
  4. I've been encouraged to truly own my faith
  5. I've been encouraged to worship God with all of my body and soul, rather than simply my mind
I must admit I haven't seen this type of behaviour elsewhere and that worries me. What's worse is that there seems to be a desire by members of the community to embrace their brand of discerning, inclusive and socially aware Christianity outside of their gathering. Apparently, in their own words, it's "Not Just a Sunday Thing". This could have a potentially devastating influence on Christianity as we know it.

My contribution over the upcoming months will be to monitor the situation and observe Space For God in their natural habitat on a weekly basis. Towards the end of the week, I'll be letting people know about what we can expect from Space For God that Sunday so that they may be properly prepared for what lies ahead. On the day after their communal gathering, I will debrief on the events that have transpired that evening. I ask that you help me in this mission and contribute intelligence as necessary.

Please stand by for updates.
