Space For God

Hello from misty Belfast!

My name is Rebecca and I started going to Space For God in January 2006. Here I have found thinking Christians who aren’t scared of diversity, multiple opinions and who share my belief that faith should be active and lives should strive for social justice for all (plus they like to sing funky African songs and sit on beanbags and laugh).

When I moved to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to be with my partner John, I did not want to stop being part of the Space for God community. A joking suggestion that I come to church on webcam led to many mad discussions and the important realisation that the Church office had broadband and all we needed was a computer and a long long blue cable to make it actually happen. (Plus MSN Messenger software and a webcam, mic and speakers).

Of course nothing is that easy, and many hilarious and torturous tech sessions ensued with poor Steph and Clare wanting to throw the computer out the window and me feeling very grateful that everyone would go to this trouble to help me. Anyway, now I come to church via the webcam and a laptop, the sound gets better all the time and we have visions of recording the service online for community members who can’t make it and want to watch it later. Who knows what is possible with virtual church! I can watch and talk and sing (although sometimes there is a delay which makes the singing very embarrassing) and I do my own version of the rituals and art activities and sometimes I send responses through and someone reads them for me in the service if the sound is too soft.

It gets better all the time and I keep growing in my faith through a crazy idea and lots of patience and love. This blog is to keep contributing where I can to the development of the Space For God church. Please say hello!
