Prayer for the World

Posted: 28/03/2007

Dear God,

We pray with all our heart and will for justice for those among us in this world, getting up every morning with hunger or fear or desperation, with negligence, with panic and pain and grief, with no space to move or no space to breathe or no space to be alone or be seen or be noticed or be important enough to be cherished. We pray for those who die stupid, unnecessary deaths, or who fight for justice and survival against barriers some us cannot ever come close to. We  pray for these people and we pray that those of us protected and privileged that we maybe able to remember that for people facing these odds, just getting up at all, just getting up everyday and starting the day, is a major act of unsung heroism. These everyday heroes are both our inspiration and our shame. We pray that we can all rise to the challenge you have given us, that the human race can reach grace through building networks of support that do not fail and that weave us together into a net of responsibility and joy. We pray we will never sit back, never forget these everyday heroes.

In Sudan and in Sydney, in New York and in Cambodia in the Solomon Islands and Sierra Leone there are  people who are saints, whose great and wondrous life-changing work will never be seen, help these saints in their work, help us all to know them, remember them, challenge them, be with them. Thank you. Lord some peoples' lives remind us we can strive higher, that we can sacrifice more for others, some peoples lives make us want to be better people. Help us to be those people for each other. In the darkest places we can be there in ways we didn’t know we could, if only we try. Help us to do this everyday.

Lord, give our leaders backbone, conscience, compassion and ethics. Let us all work together to make happiness and also to make decisions that nobody wants to make. Help guide all the leaders of countries and churches and their followers through paths brightened by the prophets of the past into a future of your love. Thank you for all the role models, all the saints, all the heroes we have and help us to grow more everyday.

Finally, we pray for this congregation, small, but bright, that we can live simply and holistically and foster hope trust and love  whilst we  question, risk, commune and grow closer to you

Amen.
