“Are local congregations places where you find a laboratory for life?” he asks. “I would love the church to be a place where I can play, investigate, work out what it is to be human, to make mistakes; where I could be part of a community that is tolerant and where people are patient with me.”
In Rod’s view, the tendency of fundamentalist churches to be preoccupied with correct behaviour stultifies the imagination. “My model of the church would be that it’s a laboratory where we’re all working away with our lives; we’re making art out of our lives.”
